A Final Goodbye — Figgy | Equine Photography, North Yorkshire & North East England
Honouring the bond between horse and human — one last time.
When One Goodbye Isn't Enough
What made this session so incredibly moving was that it wasn't the first time I had been asked to do this. Abi had come to me once before, not so many years ago to photograph her previous horse in their final days. To be trusted with that once is humbling. To be trusted with it a second time, by the same person, is something I find almost impossible to put into words.
No one should have to say that kind of goodbye twice. And yet, here we were, Abigail and Figgy, together in the woodland, in the cold quiet of that morning. There was so much tenderness between them. Every touch, every look, every kiss pressed to his velvet nose. It was raw and it was real and it was completely, heartbreakingly beautiful. I felt every bit of it behind the lens.
Why a Final Goodbye Shoot Matters
When a horse reaches the end of their life, the grief can be every bit as profound as losing any other member of the family because that is exactly what they are. For horse owners across, I know how isolating that grief can feel. Not everyone understands the depth of the bond.
But a photograph understands it. A photograph says: this mattered. This relationship was real. This horse was loved.
A final goodbye shoot gives you something tangible to hold onto when the stable is empty. It gives you the image you will reach for on the hard days, the one that shows them at their most beautiful, with the person who loved them most by their side.
Those images become heirlooms. They become comfort. They become proof that something wonderful existed.
The Session — Figgy Hamsterley Forest
We worked through the trees as the light shifted and moved around us. Figgy was an absolute gentleman, calm and willing, as though he knew this was something special. Figgy's grey dappled coat was simply stunning.
We captured them walking together along the forest path. We captured the quiet moments, foreheads touching, her arms around his neck. We captured her riding him one last time, the two of them moving through the trees as they had so many times before. And we captured Figgy alone, proud and dignified and utterly magnificent because he deserved his own portraits too.
A Privilege I Never Take Lightly
I will be honest these sessions are never easy. It is impossible to stand in the presence of something so bittersweet and remain untouched by it. But I would not change being asked for the world. Being invited into that grief, being trusted to document that final chapter, it is one of the greatest privileges my work has ever given me.
Abigail, thank you. Thank you for letting me be there for you twice now. Thank you for trusting me with something so precious. I hope these images bring you comfort in the months and years ahead, and I hope that every time you look at them, you see exactly what I saw through the lens, a horse who was deeply, completely loved.
Run free, Figgy. 🤍
