Katie & Graeme Wedding, Walworth Castle Hotel, Darlington

Katie & Graeme's Wedding at Walworth Castle Hotel, Darlington

There are weddings you photograph, and then there are weddings you feel. Katie and Graeme's day at Walworth Castle Hotel was absolutely the latter — full of raw emotion, genuine laughter, and some of the most atmospheric portraits I've ever made.

It was July. They'd hoped for sunshine. The rain had other plans. And honestly? It didn't matter for a single second.

When the Castle Becomes Your Backdrop

From the moment I arrived, I knew this was going to be a special one. Katie was getting ready in one of Walworth's beautiful rooms — lace dress, floral crown, the most incredible bouquet of soft pinks — and there was this wonderful calm energy to the morning. The kind that only comes from two people who are completely certain about what they're about to do.

The bridesmaids were stunning in deep navy, and one of my favourite early images of the day is a bridesmaid caught in the light of Walworth's famous stained glass window — that jewelled colour spilling across her face. Moments like that are why I love this building so much.

The Walk to the Ceremony

One of the most magical moments of the day came on Walworth's grand staircase — Katie and her dad making that walk together. There's something about that particular journey, the two of them framed in the archway below, that gets me every time. It's one of those fleeting moments that's over in seconds but lasts forever in a photograph. I always say the grand staircase at Walworth is one of the most naturally cinematic spots I work in, and this was proof of exactly that.

A Ceremony Full of Feeling

The ceremony was moved inside due to the rain — but inside Walworth Castle, that's no hardship whatsoever. The rooms are so full of character and warmth that the atmosphere was completely magical. Guests were seated, the piper played outside as people arrived (yes, a piper — one of those details that takes a North East castle wedding and turns it into something truly unforgettable), and then Katie walked in.

The first embrace after they were married — her head tucked into his shoulder, veil cascading around them, the grand wooden staircase post behind them — is one of those images I'll always be proud of.

And then there was the moment with what I can only describe as the most joyful grandmother in the history of weddings. Laughing, completely delighted — that image is pure gold. It's a reminder that wedding photography isn't just about the couple; it's about everyone whose heart is full that day.

The Dungeon — Walworth's Best Kept Secret

Now. Let's talk about the dungeon.

Not every wedding venue has one. Walworth Castle does — and Katie and Graeme got to use it for portraits, which made for some of the most dramatic, atmospheric images I've ever produced at this venue. Ancient stone arches, candlelight, shadows that do all the heavy lifting — it is an extraordinary space. Katie in her lace gown, Graeme beside her, that flickering warm light catching the texture of 800-year-old walls. Honestly, I could have stayed in there all evening.

If you're planning a wedding at Walworth Castle and you haven't asked about the dungeon yet — ask. It is unlike anything else.

Katie & Graeme — What a Pair

What struck me most about these two was how themselves they were all day. Katie's floral crown, her tattoos peeking through the lace, her bold and beautiful presence — she didn't try to fit into a conventional wedding mould and the photographs are so much richer for it. Graeme was relaxed, warm, completely besotted. Together they were magnetic.

The rain gave us an entirely different day to the one they'd planned. But the day they got? Full of laughter, full of feeling, full of images that will last a lifetime. I wouldn't change a thing.

Congratulations again to the new Mr & Mrs Matthews. What an absolute honour to be your photographer. 🤍
